I had always imagined this moment to be perfect. Smiling faces. Warm hugs. The kindest words and loving wishes. They would come with a breath of excitement, a glint of curiosity in their eyes. There would be concern and snippets of admiration. Baskets of advice, platters of reassurance, plenty of wholehearted goodness. I would laugh […]

An emotion packed piece of writing, Terveen. Not many decisions could be harder than this.

  • brittabenson says:

Sad and powerful. Another piece that will stay with the reader for a long time. It always amazes me how much emotion you can pack in so few words. Thanks for sharing, Terveen.

I appreciate it, Britta. At times, fewer words can say so much. And sadness is one emotion that doesn’t need a lot to be conveyed. Thank you. 🙂

  • C. D. Anders says:

Wasn’t expecting that ending. Sad, maybe bittersweet. Well written either way.

  • Jane Aguiar says:

Flash fiction is always changing at the end. It turned the story around but sad.

  • Well written… tough choices are made by tough people… or those who feel they have no other option. Either way life sometime does not wait for an answer!

  • Jeff Flesch says:

A heartbreaking reality, written with care and beauty. Lovely write, Terveen. ☺️

  • Mike U. says:

The twist at the end…crushing…but reflects real-life. This is such a well written and poignant tale. It’s so sad this occurs so often nowadays. Very well done, Terveen. 🙂

It is a sad state of affairs, Mike. I think awareness is important so that such unfortunate decisions don’t have to be made in the first place. Teenage years shouldn’t be bound by the duties of parenthood. But then, some may disagree. Thanks so much for your wonderful comment. 🙂

  • The hopes of discovering something beautiful suddenly met the harsh reality of life in the end, an engaging read!

When I was 14 or 15, one of the girls in our grade got pregnant and there were so much denouncing and scolding in people’s judgement of her that I was very angry. How could people be so intolerant? People talked as if she’s a criminal. That’s just not right. It’s a natural thing happening to girls. And society was really cruel in treating girls so cruelly. I felt that adults were rather cruel in treating teenage girls so abominably. Actually people were not so intolerant in ancient time. There were plenty of incidents in historical books that when such things happen, certain solutions were found. Also in those days, people got married very young and teenage pregnancy was not treated so harshly.

    • Terveen Gill says:

Judgment often takes over and all teachings, learnings, and rectifications go to hell. I can understand what you’re saying. If only proper measures could be taken and communication could be enhanced, a lot of situations could be avoided or at least handled well. Times have changed but somehow awareness and compassion have been left behind…
Thanks for sharing this, Haoyan. I greatly appreciate it. 🙂
